SHPE’s pre-college Virtual STEM Lab offerings provide K-12 students access to a variety of opportunities and experiences that spark excitement for science, technology, engineering and math. These efforts meet students where they are – both developmentally and geographically. In 2023/2024 we brought over 32  hands-on STEM experiences to student’s homes, schools, communities, and computers all across the country. These last 18 months were all about giving true access to STEM exploration without any limits.

Excel con SHPE: Scholars Assisting Scholars

In partnership with Reboot Representation, SHPE piloted Excel con SHPE  to launch a virtual tutoring program designed to change the culture of STEM.  SHPE members were hired as tutors at partner institutions to attend class and lead virtual study sessions in selected gate keeping courses.

Unique Program Characteristics Driving Impact:
  • Tutors are paid a high wage to attend the course they support to refresh their knowledge and skills specific to the class.
  • Program provides wraparound services supporting the tutor first providing community, ownership of the program, and professional development.
  • Customized platform enables agile tutoring- the program is where and when the tutor and tutees need help with gamification and incentives ensuring that the tutors are available when they’re needed the most.
  • Positions Hispanics in STEM as leaders and subject matter experts. SHPE implementing this program enables tutors to be hired from 19,000+ SHPE members to ensure Hispanics in STEM are positioned as an asset to their campus.
